I am Welsh, born in Newport in 1945. I trained as a librarian at the College of Librarianship, Wales (now part of Aberystwyth University) and later took a degree in politics at the University of Nottingham.

 

My career began in Newport Public Libraries, continued at Rolls-Royce in Derby, the University of Aston, and ended at the University of Birmingham. Whilst at Birmingham University I was appointed Visiting Professor in Information Studies at the University of Central England (now the Birmingham City University).

 

Following my retirement in 2002 I moved to France, firstly living in Paris and then moving to the Touraine where I spent eleven years in Saint Georges sur Cher (41) before moving to Tours in 2015. I became a French citizen in 2002 and have dual Franco-British nationality.

My approach to photography and my growing interest in creating images stems largely from an exhibition called ‘Ellsworth Kelly, the years in France, 1948-1954’ held at the Galerie Nationale Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1992. I was mesmerized by the images he created. His visual perception of colour and light was something that moved me and motivated me to record my own view of the world.

 

However, it was only after my retirement that I had the time and space to express my own worldview through the camera. At first, I tried my hand at painting but soon realised my talent was too limited. I therefore concentrated on photographic images and was greatly encouraged by my close friend Terry Netter, an American painter, and Sheila Shulman, an American photographer who both lived nearby.

I began exhibiting my photographs in the Touraine with the encouragement of these friends and my partner, Louis Didier.  I held exhibitions at that time in Blois, Montrichard, Tours, Chenonceau and other places including Paris, Birmingham and Machynlleth in Wales. In 2017 I became a contributor to Shutterstock, and I’ve ‘sold’ around 250 images worldwide through that database. I ceased exhibiting because of Covid and because I was unhappy with the work I was showing.

 

The recent interest in Ellsworth Kelly’s work prompted me to recreate my website and exhibit the photos that more faithfully reveal the photographer inside me. Having again been inspired by Kelly’s photos and also by Rothko’s use of colour, this new website has been created with the help of website developer Mehdy Tamim and puts my own approach to photography into better focus. It has been designed to present, for better or worse, a more faithful representation of my work as an artist.  I hope you find these photos of interest for I feel confident in exhibiting them.

Je suis gallois, né à Newport en 1945. J’ai suivi une formation de bibliothécaire au College of Librarianship, au Pays de Galles (qui fait maintenant partie de l’Université d’Aberystwyth) et j’ai ensuite obtenu un diplôme en politique à l’Université de Nottingham. Ma carrière a commencé dans les bibliothèques publiques de Newport et s’est poursuivie chez Rolls-Royce à Derby, à l’Université d’Aston et enfin à l’Université de Birmingham. Pendant mes études à l’Université  de  Birmingham, j’  ai été nommé professeur invité en services d’information à l’Université d’Angleterre centrale (aujourd’hui l’Université de la ville de Birmingham).

 

Après ma retraite en 2002, j’ai déménagé en France, d ‘abord à Paris, puis en Touraine où j’ai passé onze ans à Saint Georges sur Cher (41) avant de m’installer à Tours en 2015.

Mon approche de la photographie et mon intérêt croissant pour la création d’images découlent en grande partie d’une exposition intitulée « Ellsworth Kelly, les années en France, 1948-1954 » qui s’est tenue à la Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume à Paris en 1992. J’ai été fasciné par les images qu’il a créées. Sa perception visuelle de la couleur et de la lumière m’a ému et motivé à enregistrer ma propre vision du monde.

 

Cependant, ce n’est qu’après ma retraite que j’ai eu le temps et l’espace pour exprimer ma propre vision du monde à travers la caméra. Au début, je me suis essayé à la peinture, mais je me suis vite rendu compte que mon talent était trop limité. Je me suis donc concentré sur les images photographiques et j’ai été grandement encouragé par mon ami proche Terry Netter, un peintre américain, et Sheila Shulman, une photographe américaine qui vivaient tous deux à proximité.

 

J’ai commencé à exposer mes photographies en Touraine avec les encouragements de ces amis et de mon compagnon, Louis Didier.  J’ai fait des expositions à cette époque à Blois, Montrichard, Tours, Chenonceau et d’autres endroits comme Paris, Birmingham et Machynlleth au Pays de Galles. En 2017, je suis devenu contributeur de Shutterstock, et j’ai « vendu » environ 250 images dans le monde entier grâce à cette base de données. J’ai arrêté d’exposer à cause du Covid et parce que je n’étais pas satisfait du travail que je présentais.

 

L’intérêt récent pour le travail d’Ellsworth Kelly m’a incité à recréer mon site web et à exposer les photos qui révèlent le plus fidèlement le photographe qui sommeille en moi. Ayant de nouveau été inspiré par les photos de Kelly et aussi par l’utilisation de la couleur de Rothko, ce nouveau site Web a été créé avec l’aide de Mehdy Tamim, créateur de sites web, pour mettre en valeur ma propre vision. Il a été conçu pour présenter, pour le meilleur ou pour le pire, la véritable représentation de mon travail en tant qu’artiste.  J’espère que vous trouverez ces photos intéressantes car je me sens assez confiant pour les exposer.
